Chat.com is a new domain associated with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Sam Altman publicly confirmed the purchase, but the deal amount has not been disclosed.
Chat.com is one of the oldest domains, originally registered in September 1996. In 2023, HubSpot co-founder Dharmesh Shah bought it for $15.5 million—one of the most expensive domain deals.
In March 2024, Shah said he had sold the domain but couldn’t name the buyer. In November, he confirmed that OpenAI purchased https://chat.com, and Altman also posted about it.
Shah noted that he couldn’t discuss the buyer until the domain began redirecting to the official ChatGPT site. He also shared a prompt for ChatGPT o1-preview that estimates the sale at $15–16 million, with 80–100% of the deal potentially paid in OpenAI shares (an estimate, not an official figure).
At the time of writing, chat.com opens chatgpt.com. This suggests OpenAI is not planning an immediate rename of ChatGPT. For now, Chat.com mainly makes it faster to reach ChatGPT by typing a shorter URL.
