Stable Diffusion is an open-source AI model for generating images from text prompts. Released by Stability AI in 2022, it stands out from tools like Midjourney and DALL-E by supporting free use and local installation on your own computer.
Key features
- Text-to-image generation with multiple styles (including photorealism, anime, and digital art)
- Inpainting to replace or edit objects in an existing image
- Outpainting to extend an image and automatically fill the background
- ControlNet for generation guided by sketches and 3D references
- LoRA “micro-models” for fast stylization without heavy VRAM use
- Seed locking to create controlled variations of the same image
Stable Diffusion handles prompts in Russian as well as English. Version 3 improves detail and renders text in images more accurately.
How to use and install
You can run Stable Diffusion online or locally. Local setup typically requires a GPU with 4+ GB VRAM and about 15 GB of free disk space.
- Online: DreamStudio (paid, from $10 per 1,000 credits), Hugging Face (free but slower), Playground AI (unlimited with watermarks)
- Local: Automatic1111 (popular web UI), ComfyUI (node-based workflow, often preferred for AMD), Easy Diffusion 3.0 (simplified installer)
Technical notes
