What is Actuators

GlossaryAI Infrastructure

The physical components of a robot or system that translate an algorithm's command into an action: moving, pressing, turning, or grasping.

Definition

Actuators connect digital AI to the real world. An algorithm can calculate an action, but a motor, actuator, manipulator, valve, or servo must physically execute it. In robotics, such devices work together with sensors and a control system.

Example

The robot vacuum cleaner decides to turn, and the actuators move the wheels and regulate the motor power.

Why it matters

Without understanding this part, it is difficult to evaluate real AI solutions for manufacturing, logistics, medicine, drones and household robots.

How it works

The control system sends a signal to the actuator, and it converts electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic energy into movement or other action.

Where it is used

  • robots and manipulators
  • drones and autonomous technology
  • smart production

Limitations

Even an accurate model will not help if the actuator is slow, inaccurate, worn out, or not suitable for the environment.
