What is AI Assistants

GlossaryLanguage Models and Natural Language Processing

AI-powered digital assistants that answer questions, help with tasks, texts, searches, code or work organization.

Definition

An AI assistant can be a chatbot, a voice assistant, a built-in feature in an editor, a support tool, or a personal work assistant. Its value is that it understands the query in natural language and helps complete the task, rather than just showing a list of links.

Example

The editor can ask the AI assistant to shorten the text, suggest headings, check the structure and prepare description options for the service card.

Why it matters

The term is important for users: this is one of the most popular categories of tools, but assistants differ greatly in tasks, quality and access to data.

How it works

The assistant accepts the request, uses the language model, context, sometimes memory and external tools. Then it forms a response or action: text, plan, code, table, letter or hint.

Where it is used

  • writing and editing
  • information search
  • customer support and code work

Limitations

The assistant can make mistakes, make up facts, misunderstand the context, or reveal sensitive data if not configured correctly.
