Description

OpenAI MuseNet is a neural network that generates music compositions up to 4 minutes long using up to 10 different instruments. It can blend styles ranging from country to Mozart and The Beatles.

What MuseNet does

MuseNet generates music across genres and can imitate recognizable composer styles. It’s trained with deep learning on a large collection of music data, helping it model musical structure, harmony, rhythm, and other elements.

Key capabilities include:

  • Generating music in multiple genres, including classical, pop, rock, and jazz
  • Imitating the style of composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven
  • Writing for different instruments (for example, piano, violin, guitar, and more)
  • Producing both style-based continuations and entirely new pieces

MuseNet uses the same underlying approach as GPT-2, predicting the next token in a sequence (music or text). It can help with ideas and variations for developing musical themes.

How to generate music

MuseNet is available through a web interface on OpenAI’s official site. You can:

  • Choose a style or composer
  • Provide starting notes or a fragment of a known piece
  • Select the instruments for the composition
  • Run generation and refine the result

MuseNet doesn’t offer a Russian interface, but it’s free to use in English via the web.
