SearchGPT is OpenAI’s new AI-powered search engine. It applies GPT models to understand the context of a query and return more targeted answers than traditional keyword-based search.
How it differs from traditional search
Instead of only indexing and ranking web pages, SearchGPT is designed to learn from information it processes, generate summaries, and include links to original sources.
Example use case:
- When searching for AI research, a classic search engine mainly returns relevant websites.
- SearchGPT can analyze papers and generate a short overview of key findings and trends.
- It can also provide links to the original publications for deeper reading.
Launch timeline and availability
OpenAI has stated a public launch is planned for fall 2024, with timing depending on how beta testing goes. SearchGPT is expected to be free to use and is being developed with integration into OpenAI’s product ecosystem, including:
- ChatGPT
- Sora
- DALL-E
Beta testing status
At the time of writing, the beta test is ongoing and requires a ChatGPT account. Users could join via the official site waitlist, but new sign-ups were closed on August 17 due to high demand.
