What is AI in Healthcare Ethics

GlossaryEthics & Safety

Principles for the safe, fair and responsible use of AI in medicine and related services.

Definition

The ethics of AI in healthcare concerns diagnoses, recommendations, processing of medical data, access to care, physician responsibility, and explainability of decisions. This is where errors are particularly sensitive: an incorrect cue or biased model can affect a person's health.

Example

The image analysis system helps the doctor detect suspicious areas, but the final decision and responsibility remain with the specialist.

Why it matters

The term is important because medical AI requires stricter vetting than typical text or design services.

How it works

Ethical implementation includes clinical review, data protection, clear system intent, specialist oversight, quality assessment across patient groups, and transparent boundaries.

Where it is used

  • medical image analysis
  • doctor support
  • medical data processing

Limitations

AI should not replace unsupervised professional medical advice. Data bias, leaks, and misinterpretation of results are also possible.
