What is AI Policy

GlossaryEthics & Safety

A set of rules, goals, and decisions by an organization or government about how to develop, use, and control AI.

Definition

AI policies can be government, industry or corporate. It defines acceptable scenarios, data requirements, security, liability, transparency, employee training, and tool review procedures. For the company, this is a practical document that reduces chaos when implementing neural networks.

Example

The editors can approve a policy: AI is allowed for drafts, but facts are verified by a person, and confidential data cannot be entered into external services.

Why it matters

The term is important because AI is being adopted quickly, and the lack of rules almost always leads to errors, leaks and controversial publications.

How it works

The policy specifies the goals, scope, roles, permitted and prohibited actions, data requirements, approval process and responsibilities.

Where it is used

  • corporate rules
  • employee training
  • government regulation

Limitations

Policies are useless if they are too general, not updated, and not built into actual work processes.
