OpenAI coding agent for code, review and repository tasks

0

Description

OpenAI Codex is OpenAI's coding agent for writing, reviewing, editing, and debugging code. It can work in an IDE, through the CLI, on web and mobile surfaces, and in CI/CD workflows with the SDK. On AIDive, it fits the vibe coding tools stack next to Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot.

What Codex Does

  • writes and edits code with repository context
  • reviews changes and helps catch implementation issues
  • debugs errors and explains unfamiliar code
  • runs as an IDE-side assistant or delegated cloud agent
  • supports agentic software engineering workflows around real projects

Where It Fits

Codex is strongest when you want to hand off a real development task, review a change, or keep an AI agent close to your repository. For quick inline completion, compare it with GitHub Copilot. For a full AI-first editor, compare it with Cursor or Windsurf. For terminal-first work, compare it with Claude Code, Cline, Kilo Code, and Aider.

What To Check

Access, model limits, and IDE features depend on the current OpenAI and ChatGPT plans. Before using Codex in a company repository, check workspace permissions, code review rules, secrets handling, and whether cloud delegation is allowed for that codebase.
